Musk Ox Hunting - Guns, Ammo and Optics
By: Bryce M. Towsley

The rifle I used was a stainless, synthetic, Thompson Center Encore frame with a blued barrel from Thompson Center’s Custom Shop chambered in .416 Rigby. No doubt it’s a lot more cartridge than needed for musk ox, but I had never hunted with this classic old big game cartridge. Federal had recently started loading ammo for it and so I “seized the moment” and decided to take a cartridge that made its name in the tropics of Africa to the cold, blue north. I can report that the gun and ammo performed flawlessly.

I used a Leupold 1.5-5 Vari-X III rifle scope and my binoculars were the Leupold 10X42 Wind River model. Again, their performance was Arctic perfection.
