These are some of the outfitters I have hunted with recently. I add them here because I think they offer a good value and as a service to those of you who visit this site. I am not being paid or getting free hunts in return, so this is an honest list. These are only the outfitters I have hunted with in the past few years, which helps keep the information current.

Clearly there are a lot of outfitters I have hunted with who are not on there. That’s for a reason. If I would not spend my hard earned money to hunt with somebody, I won’t suggest that you do either. If they suck, they don’t make the cut on this page.

I have known Steve for more than twenty years. When I had my booking agency he was one of the outfitters that I always knew would send back happy customers. I have personally hunted antelope with black powder at his New Mexico camp and in 2007 I hunted antelope and aoudad near Marfa, Texas. Both were great hunts. The camps are not fancy, but they provide everything you need. The N. M. Camp is in Teepees, which adds a nice touch. Steve and his guides are hunters and know how to find success.

I took a dall sheep with Chris and Sharron in 2006 and it was one of the highlights of my hunting career. You can read about that in the articles section.

They run an outstanding camp, but more importantly, I have known them both for several years and they are good people. Honest and hard working, they will offer any hunter a great hunt.
They also have an Alberta whitetail operation. I was there several years back and while I had a dose of “Towsley’s Luck” and was unsuccessful, they did take some huge bucks that week. One hunter brought in a buck that scored over 200 B&C.

I hunted coues deer in Mexico with Kurt a few years ago. You can read about it in the articles section. Look past the humor and understand that this was a great adventure and one of the better hunts I have made. Kurt has a reputation as one of the best.

Pete Richardson

North Troy, VT 05859

Email: kimnpete@together.net

Pete is an old friend. He offers a winter snowshoe hare hunting experience in northern Vermont that is something every hunter should try in his lifetime. I try to go at least once a year. If you are lucky enough to draw a moose tag in Vermont, Pete is your guy and he can put you on a big bull. He also has some black bear with dogs hunting in Maine. I have not tried that, but I have run here in Vermont with Pete’s dogs and they are top shelf. Pete is a guide and doesn’t offer lodging or food, so you will be staying in a hotel. But, his prices are affordable and he will give you an adventure.

I hunted mountain goat with Collingwood Brothers in 2007 and am booked for mountain caribou and moose in 2008. I was a booking agent for more than 15 years and have been writing about hunting for about 25 years and this is one of the best mountain hunting outfitters I have encountered. Everything about my hunt with them was top notch.

I hunted with Bruce in south-central Montana in 2005. I took a great mule deer, one of my best. The tent camps were basic, but that was the point. They made for a great adventure and Bruce and I became fast friends.

I did my first hunt with Fred and Martin sometime in the eighties. They were still hunting in New Brunswick back then. Now they are in the far north of Nunavut. They have become friends and when I had my booking agency they were another of the few trusted outfitters I knew I could always count on.

I hunted musk ox with them in 2005. Read about it in the articles section. It was a life experience and one of the most exciting and exotic hunts I have ever taken. I got a great bull as well.

Lee has a bison hunt that will take you back to the old days. Hunters stay in dugout shelters or in Teepees. You hunt from horseback, just like the old buffalo hunters. I shot my bull with a Sharps Reproduction rifle and felt like I was back in the 1870s with Bill Dixon, hunting buffalo. Read about that in the articles section.

I hunted with Jaco in Tanzania in 2005, taking two cape buffalo and some plains game. It was one of my most memorable safaris. You can read about it in the articles section.

I hunted with Leon Meyer in 2005 when he was running the hunting operation for another owner. It was excellent in every way and now Leon and his wife Mandy have branched out on their own. They are friends who have been to my home several times and I know people who hunt with them every year. They will provide an excellent South Africa hunting experience. Leon is a hard core hunter and a gun guy. He is also a bow hunter and understands archery hunting. Mandy is a licensed PH and an excellent hunter. She is also a very talented artist and you will want to check out her paintings.

Josh is a young guy trying to get established as a hunting outfitter. The accommodations are at his home and you eat what he eats. It’s nothing fancy, but comfortable enough. His strong point is that he has some incredible whitetails. Check out the photos here. I think that this is the sleeper for big bucks in the lower 48, as I have seen more big deer when hunting here than anyplace I have hunted whitetails.

He also has pheasant hunting, but I have not tried it so I can’t comment one way or the other.

Actually it’s been a few years since I hunted with Mike. But, I have hunted there several times for several different critters. I have even brought my kids out to hunt with him. I stay informed through other hunters who Mike hosts every year and I know that he still runs a great place.

The lodging can get a little crowded, but the hunting makes up for it. I have shot antelope, whitetail, mule deer and turkeys with Mike and he has always delivered.

Steve is a turkey hunting fanatic and one of the highlights of my spring is to chase Rio’s with him. He has some of the best turkey hunting on earth. He also hunts them right. Don’t plan to sit at a feeder and ambush them like some Texas outfitters. With Steve you call the birds, just as God intended.

Steve also has some very good whitetail hunting. They are not giant bucks in the free ranging hunting, but the possibility of a 130 class buck is pretty real. Much of the deer hunting will be from box blinds and sometimes at feeders, as is a Texas tradition. He is opening a new high fence operation in 2008 that promises some outstanding whitetails. I’ll check it out and let you know.

The lodge is basic with a bunk house for sleeping. The rooms hold three hunters and each have its own bathroom. The main lodge has a large dining room for meals. It’s Texas-style food and plenty of it.

Steve also has private land elk hunts in New Mexico that are priced very reasonably. I have not personally done the hunt, but I have been on the property. I also know Steve, consider him a good friend, and expect he will do a good job with any hunt he offers.
